Salmon Fishing on Loch Tay, Perthshire, Scotland

The salmon season on the Tay and tributaries commences on 15 January, the first of the large Scottish rivers to open, and closes on 15 October. If you fish, you will probably have heard about the Central and West beats of Loch Tay, where it’s not unusual for the first and some of the largest salmon on the Tay system to be caught every year.

If you’d like to try your hand with a rod for the first time, Ardeonaig is a pretty good place to start. Fish over 20lbs are caught every year with salmon at 30lbs not unknown and in 2007 we caught the first salmon on Loch Tay.

Trolling is generally the order of the day with Rappala's, Tobies and Kynochs taking preference. This surely is one of the best ways to fish this area, taking in the magnificent scenery, snow-capped peaks and even ospreys while swapping fishing stories with your ghillie. The hotel also has access to beats on the upper Tay, Lyon and Dochart rivers.

Anglers can, should they wish be looked after by experienced local ghillies who know the loch well and are supported by our eager-to-oblige hotel staff. (Dinner should not be missed, especially if you’ve caught some of it yourself.)

We also offer dual fishing packages for a mix of both loch and river fishing at very good prices, please give us a call and find out more. To book fishing online, please use www.fishtay.co.uk. You will be able to book all your fishing, check water heights, get up-to-date news and tips as well as weather reports.
